Cinderella

Ballet de Chambre de Hirofumi Inoue, Tokyo

Production: Hirofumi Inoue after Choreography by Sir Frederick Ashton
Music: Serge Prokofiev - Ballet Score: John Lanchberry

I was asked to design Cinderella for Mr Inoue and sent to Tokyo by Jane Edgeworth who was then the Director of Ballet and Dance for the British Council, around 1978. It was my first visit to Japan and I loved Tokyo. I was an extraordinary and mind expanding experience. I was befriended by a young man who I met on my first night there - sadly I do not remember his name - but he not only took me to small Hoytan to sample delicious Japanese food but also to his mother’s house, temples and boating on a lake. It was on this visit that I bought a Nikon camera and took many photographs which I intend to show in a photographic gallery on this site.

I was unwell the year that I designed Cinderella, had had to decamp from a basement flat in Islington which was being damp-proofed and staying at a friends flat in Camden. It was from here that I consulted with Misha Norland, the homoeopath who became my life long friend, and introduced me to this wonderful healing art.
